As a kid, we all learned how important it is to brush and floss regularly. But as we grow up, responsibilities mount and we sometimes forget just how important these basics are. You don’t have to be a dentist to understand this process: eating and drinking causes bacteria buildup, which causes damaging plaque to build up on teeth and gums. Brushing and flossing eliminates or minimizes plaque and prevents countless tooth problems. In our practice, we see so many dental problems that could easily be avoided with simple home care commitments. Making that small extra effort, at least twice a day, can literally save your teeth, minimize problems arising from decay, and prevent periodontal disease. Fluoride, as an additive in toothpaste, a nighttime rinse or a treatment in the dental chair, can also drastically reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth and save your teeth from a myriad of problems. Watching your sugar intake is also an important factor in preserving the health of your teeth and gums. Too many sugary snacks and soda can cause decay to occur at a fast rate. Also, to reduce your chances of gum disease and oral cancer, we encourage patients to avoid smoking!
