Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are a great option for patients who have one or more missing teeth and want to avoid the negative health effects of tooth loss. A carefully placed dental bridge can prevent shifting of teeth, decay, gum disease and bone loss. A dental bridge is created by placing porcelain crowns on both sides of the tooth gap. After the two crowns are created and placed, a false tooth is fused to the porcelain crowns on opposing sides. By bonding the teeth together with a bridge, there will be a smaller risk of shifting and/or bone loss. By using the strengths and integrity of the natural, surrounding teeth, the tooth replacement is firmly anchored and can function as well as a natural tooth.
During your first appointment, the neighboring teeth are prepared for crown placement and impressions are taken. Dr. Cohen creates a temporary bridge for you to wear while your custom dental bridge is being created at our lab. During your next appointment, your custom dental bridge is permanently cemented in place and you are given instruction on care of your new dental bridge.
Our patients love the freedom that dental bridges offer, with a noticeable smile improvement, enhanced self-confidence, and the ability to eat, talk and chew without obstruction. Dr. Cohen may recommend a traditional dental bridge, a cantilever bridge, or a Maryland bonded bridge, depending on your unique situation.
All-porcelain crowns compared with porcelain-fused-to-metal
- All-porcelain crowns are translucent, just like natural enamel. When porcelain is baked onto metal, it requires an opaquer layer that detracts from the natural beauty.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns invariably develop a black line at the gumline. Dentists try to hide this line under the gum, but they're not always successful. A "porcelain butt margin" can make the line a little less noticeable, but it will still be there. All-porcelain crowns have a seamless bonded margin that is invisible, so there is no black line.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are strong enough to hold up on molar teeth. All-porcelain crowns aren't quite as strong, but are plenty strong enough to hold up on front teeth.
- All-porcelain crowns require advanced bonding technology that many dentists aren't familiar with. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can be cemented with basic techniques that are taught in dental schools.
